The grills are designed with 23 closely spaced spindles – another design element of the style, with a concave top rail and two small cutout squares in the center. The finish on the bed is called Aged Slate and is a multi-step process that makes the bed look as though it was made of wrought iron a long time ago.

The wood is a hardwood stained to resemble Oak - which is characteristic of this design period - and the grills are plated Antique Brass. The headboard is 55½” high while the footboard is 32”. The top rails of the grills are four inches wide and are beveled across the top to give them some heft. An interesting design feature of this bed, are the brackets that fit around the top and bottom of the footboard - and the top of the headboard posts. Here too we see the faux rivets that make the suggestion of construction. The bed has a “chunky” hand-carved quality about it, which reflects the desire of the artisans of the time to avoid creating pieces that looked too sophisticated or refined.

The 54 3/8” double-post headboard and the 37 13/16” open-toe footboard curve around the corners of the bed creating the illusion of enclosure while still maintaining an open air. The finish color is Aged Bronze which is a Gray base coat, highlighted with Gold, brushed with Black all covered with a flat clear lacquer. In addition to the bed, the Wilmington has accessory pieces that carry through the design. There is a nightstand, bench and mirror, all with the same scrollwork and gold finials that when added with the bed, make a stylish yet uncomplicated bedroom statement.

The grills of the Wisteria bed are alive with creeping vines. Emanating from a vase at the bottom of each grill, the shoots spread up and out, clinging to posts and encircling rails until they’ve formed these magical grills that look as though they’re just tenuously held together. In reality the grills are made of scrolled tubing pieces that end with leaf castings. The headboard is curved and measures 53¾” at its center with 60” posts on each side. The footboard has an undulating top rail that measures 35¼” at its highest points and has 42” posts. The finish, Stone, is a muted putty color with brown and black highlights, very earthy.
